CLN2-specific physical therapy can help maintain function and extend independence for children for as long as possible<\/h4>\n

Early intervention with various types of therapies\u2014physical, occupational, and speech\u2014is important, with a special emphasis on physical therapy to help sustain function for as long as possible. Some experts recommend physical therapy as often as 2 to 3 times per week.1<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n

Goals of CLN2 disease physical therapy are to:<\/p>\n

  • MAINTAIN<\/strong> activities of daily living\n
      \n
    • Promoting comfort<\/li>\n
    • Extending independence and function<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • OPTIMIZE<\/strong> adaptive equipment\n
        \n
      • Enabling ambulation and motor control<\/li>\n
      • Ensuring posture<\/li>\n
      • Relieving pain<\/li>\n
      • Supporting food intake<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • REDUCE<\/strong> the risk of secondary complications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Motor control interventions include:<\/p>\n

        • Gross motor exercises<\/li>\n
        • Fine motor exercises<\/li>\n
        • Visual-motor coordination exercises<\/li>\n

          Walking and standing devices facilitate eating and speaking, and may be used to manage movement disorders<\/p>\n

          Orthoses\/braces provide stability to address symptoms based on loss of function, like ataxia<\/p>\n

          Ramps and other in-\u00adhome equipment assist with ambulation<\/p>\n

          Experts recommend including an integrative therapy to help further promote positive stimulation, strength, flexibility, comfort, and mobility. For example, integrative therapy may include any of the following:<\/p>\n

          • Swimming\/water therapy<\/li>\n
          • Massage for hypertonia and pain control<\/li>\n
          • Hippotherapy early in the disease<\/li>\n
